What’s up Queen,
My name is Kate, I am a Nurse, Mom, Wife, and Entrepreneur.
I have been a nurse since 2015. My experience ranges anywhere from ICU to IR.
I understand where you’re coming from, and I’ve been there before. I was that burned-out, overworked, stressed-out, overstimulated woman who knew she wanted something different. But what the hell do ya do?
At first, I thought the answer was to go back to school. And I did.
However, after almost completing my DFNP, I realized I needed to do some inner work. After pouring myself into everything self-development, I finally figured it out.
This podcast and site are the fruits of all my labors. I must share what I have found with other women who are feeling the same way I was.
My promise is to always inspire and motivate you to reach for more. Listen to “you” and what “you” is saying.
You did not waste your time. You are right where you should be. Right now is perfect.

Do You Have The Right Mindset for Success?
In this episode, I am going to talk about mindset. Specifically the difference between a growth and fixed mindset, you will learn to identify the two and what you can do to implement growth mindset shifts into your everyday. Stick around to the end, I am gonna share some transformational tips that I have implemented and you will for sure want to implement them as well.
A few months ago when I was still in the early stages of my personal growth journey (P.S. This is a never-ending process so I am aware that I will never be done and I am excited about that).
I was listening to Mindset, the new psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. Listening to books on Audible while I drive to work is very helpful when you have limited time and big dreams. I will place a link for a 30 day trial here.
The amount of awareness this book brought me was surprising. When I first started listening I had no idea what either mindset was, but I knew you needed to believe you could achieve something in order to achieve. Yet, I found that there is so much more to this mindset thing.
Types Of Mindsets.
Let’s start off with the different types of mindset frameworks: we have fixed and growth.
A fixed mindset is not expansive like growth is. Dweck states that the fixed mindset is “intelligence static” leading those with a fixed mindset to desire to look smart and avoid difficult challenges. They will give up early and overall they feel threatened by the success of others. The real worry is that with this mindset these individuals will not achieve their full potential.
Now, on the other hand a growth mindset believes that everything can be learned, and they have a deep desire to learn, they love challenges, love to find solutions, and love the path to mastering a skill. They thrive and get inspiration from critiques from others to continue to master and learn a new skill. These individual will reach a high level of success then a fixed mindset.
Assess Your Mindset.
Let’s think about your mindset, what framework do you feel you’re in?
In the beginning, I was 100% in the fixed category. I find that a lot of us in the hospital are. I am not sure if it is the conditioning or culture that gets us to this mind-frame. But we all have a place and we can learn something new and try to master it but overall you have your role and if your already good at your role you end up in a limbo of wanting growth but whats next. Or maybe you’re in the mindset that you couldn’t become a NP or PA because you’re not smart enough, all because you failed that one class in nursing school (true story). That is a prime example of fixed statement.
Stereotypical Mindset.
When I was listening to Dwecks research, I also found it really interesting that there is a link between mindset and stereotypes. The example that she uses is essentially women testing poorly in math confirms their stereotype. The stereotype that women are not as smart as men, or that they are less than and when these are confirmed they drag you down into the darkness of the fixed mindset.
There are a lot of stereotypes in nursing, almost too many to name. Stereotypes about women, about intelligence, and the list could go on and on. So when it comes to breaking out on your own I know how incredibly hard that is. These fixed mindsets around you can cause you to feel scared and stuck. I am here for you. Just know that not everyone needs to know your goals, many times I worked in the shadows before every talking about what lights me up because my mindset wasn’t ready to be tested yet.
How Do Your Change Your Mindset?
Rewarding ourselves for the effort, praise our learning and start to rewire our thinking towards learning and growing even if we fail.
I know this is a rough road, but for a lot of us in medicine we tend to be high achievers and a lot of the time success comes easy to us. So when you trying something completely new, you have to reframe your thinking a little bit.
So let’s try a little exercise…
Let’s think about that crazy goal that keeps coming up for you. What is it, what is being said to you about this goal? Who is it saying it?
Jot the answer down to all of these questions in a journal and ponder these. Then I want you to reframe them. When you think about your goal can you remind yourself that you love learning new things and that this is exciting. You may not “know how to do it” right now, but with time, practice and education you will be able to master this skill just like every other skill you have. Every time you “fail” you learn. Making this journey even more unique to you.
I guess my advice when working on your mindset is just understanding there is no final destination, there is no “I made it moment” Your goals will continue to evolve and grow with you. As you learn and master new skills, you will continue to grow and achieve even more.
Think about when you are 80 yr old and looking back, if you adapt this mindset of growth, imagine everything you could do in life. Or, you could continue to live in a fixed mindset and stay small.
Do you see how important mindset is when it comes to achieving your goals?
Baby Steps Is All You Need.
Here is my tip for all of you to implement, awareness.
The first step is to be aware of the language that is being used around you and especially in your head. How are you talking to yourself?
Then you can start to change that.
With consistent praise toward yourself for the efforts you are making. When a failure pops up, acknowledge it and focus on what you have learned from the experience.
Remember it’s all a journey and when you focus on that, it takes a little bit off all of the rush and hurry.
Ok, that’s it for this week. I hope you were all able to learn something new from today, that is really my goal here. To help you learn something that you can them implement or take back into your own life and help you achieve the goals and dreams you have for yourself.
Right now we are in the middle of our 15-day mini-challenge on goal setting. If you are interested you can find that on my Freebies page.
Next week we will be discussing the balance wheel and how you can use it to help drive your goals.
I love you all and am thankful for all of you.
