What’s up Queen,
My name is Kate, I am a Nurse, Mom, Wife, and Entrepreneur.
I have been a nurse since 2015. My experience ranges anywhere from ICU to IR. So I completely understand where you’re coming from, and I’ve been there before. I was that burned-out, overworked, stressed-out, overstimulated working mom who knew I wanted something different. But had no idea how in the hell I was going to make that happen.
At first, I thought the answer was to go back to school. And I did.
However, after almost completing my DFNP, I realized I needed to do some inner work. After pouring myself into everything self-development, I finally figured it out.
This podcast and site are the fruits of all my labors. I must share with you what I have found to save you from feeling the same way I was.
My promise is always to inspire and motivate you to reach for more. Listen to “you” and what “you” is saying.
You did not waste your time. You are right where you should be.
Welcome back to the Inspire RN Podcast, I’m Kate Avery. I have had several different coaching experiences. I am going to share the good, bad, and ugly with you in today’s episode, So if you have been thinking about booking a coach, you are going to want to hear what I have to say.
Refocus Series
I am very excited about the last two episodes that I put out on this podcast, I am calling them the Refocus series. Then the second part walks you through my unique stepping stone method that will help you create a game plan to move forward. If you are interested Check out episodes 46 and 47 and download the PDF worksheet that goes along with them for the best experience.
I have opened up seats for a workshop that walks you through this process in detail. I am also going to have some time at the end for coaching, so if you have a question about the process or would like some help creating a plan. I will make sure to set aside time for you.
Please watch out for the invites. I’ll send them to my email list first and then share the link in my stories on Instagram. If you haven’t subscribed to my e-mail list. I’ll leave the link right here. Or you can go to inspirern.com and wait for the pop-up to join. I am only going to open up 10 spots so there is an opportunity to work with you at the end. I think this workshop is powerful with the extra support and I am excited to see you there.
What You Need To Know Before Your Hire A Coach
So let’s dive into what we are here for today. Which Coaching.
If you were to ask me how to get from point A to point B the fastest, I would tell you to get a coach or mentor.
I have a few suggestions when choosing a coach and method of coaching.
Number one, you should do what feels best, scary is good but you should feel excited and ready. If you find yourself dreading meetings or interactions, this coaching method or coach may not be right for you.
Some jumps if they are too large can cause you to feel extremely uncomfortable and you may shrink away from the challenge. I am speaking from experience, I have totally done this. Maybe you’re not ready, your inner work isn’t ready for that level, or maybe your self-confidence is not there yet.
Another reason for feeling dread could be that this coach is not right for you. Coaches are similar to therapists in that you have to find the right one. You should look at what they specialize in, and ideally, you would like them to be a few steps ahead of you. Your coach needs to be able to understand your needs and connect with you while having the experience to guide you into the next step necessary for your growth.
Now when it comes to your comfort level, I have found that joining a coaching membership is an easy entry point.
Coaching has a wide range of options and being aware of what will fit your needs is important to understand. Coaching also comes in a variety of price points. The more support you receive typically comes with a higher price tag. The more support you receive the faster you advance. I guess associate the price with the payout.
Answer These Questions Before Hiring A Coach
let’s say you want to start working with a coach, here are a few questions you can ask yourself when conducting your research
- Does he or she embody the achievements I am looking for in myself?
- Do I want to build a 7 figure business with online courses that run evergreen? Or am I looking for someone to help me build my confidence and launch my first offer? There is nothing wrong with going big right out of the gate, yet I will share from experience that when I feel like I am so far behind the others in the group or my coach, I tend to play smaller. This is all the inner work that I have to do, but just keep those things in mind. What situation are you going to get the most bang for your buck?
- What method fits me best?
- Memberships are typically less expensive and they are a great jump point. Most of them have weekly or biweekly coaching calls, they will have some content that will help you in different areas of your business, such as messaging or developing an offer. They also give you the chance to connect and learn from others who may be in the same situation and can shed some light on issues you may be having.
- 1:1 or small masterminds, these are much more costly but they have a massive personalization to your needs. So if you feel like you are hung up on something or need to work through your situation in a 1:1 setting, these are very helpful. But you do lose out on the group connection typically, so if you’re looking for community this may not be the best move right away.
- What are their clients saying
- Just like anything, Check out the testimonials pages and see what others are commenting and saying about them. Usually, they are filled with possessive testimonials but make sure you feel confident in joining before you hit that pay button.
My Experience With Coaches
I wanted to share my experiences with coaching over the last few years so that you can understand why I made these suggestions.
Life Coaching
In 2022, I had my first private coaching experience. She was my hair stylist before becoming a coach, so I felt comfortable with her. At the time I booked a session because I was kind of lost. For the last years, I had been exploring different business ideas but I just could not settle on one and I found myself continuously bouncing from one to another. I knew I wasn’t going to get anywhere with this method and I thought booking a coach would be helpful. I ideally wanted someone to tell me what to do because I was not trusting my gut and I had so much inner work that needed to be unpacked, I just didn’t know that at the time.
Ultimately, I ended up booking 2 sessions with this coach and It was a great start but she was not necessarily niched to me. She was a life coach. Looking back now, I needed to work with someone who had what I wanted and understood my specific situation.
This has absolutely nothing to do with her but this is why I say find someone who you aspire to be. I am a busy mom, I need someone who understands my unique struggles. I needed someone who could slowly help me work through what I wanted. This experience is a lot of why I coach the way I do. Knowing your why and being so clear on what you want, so that you can build from there. What I can remember us researching the income potential of being a copywriter and looking at how to start doing that. I will admit I am not the best writer. I have the gift of gab. But I wasn’t clear on what I wanted and what my strengths were to make the best decision for me.
So in summary, I learned a lot but I didn’t advance from this coaching experience.
Business Coach
My next experience with a coach was a discovery call. It was exciting to get back into the coaching chair but I did not have the funds to pay for a big package or solo coaching. I enjoyed speaking with her and it was very easy but when it was time to talk about packages I just could not pull the trigger.
I reflected on this experience a lot because I was so desperate to have someone give me advice but when I looked deeper I found that I felt we were in a similar situation. We were Both at the beginning of our careers and so I saw her as more of a coworker rather than a mentor. I am 100% positive she could have helped me grow but I would have outgrown her very quickly.
Coaching Membership
Now this brings me to my most recent experience, which is a membership. Let me tell you that this membership has been the most fitting for me and has made me excited to try other coaches’ memberships.
This is my first experience with a membership and I am enjoying it. So in this group, we have weekly coaching calls where she discusses a topic. You also get the opportunity to jump in with issues we may want to work through. There is a community aspect in that you can bounce ideas or problems off of other women/ men in similar situations. I have been watching this coach for a while and when she opened the doors again for her membership I knew it was time. She has hers set up for a 6 month commitment and it is around 100$ a month. So reasonable and a big enough commitment that I know I will see change.
I will admit I was very nervous on our first coaching call. Now, I get excited to ask questions and contribute, it’s been a great experience.
Her platform has a bunch of content to watch and work through. Giving you self-paced content to binge but also the resources to get support when you need it.
The negative is that you could sit back and waste this opportunity. There isn’t anyone keeping you accountable, but if you commit you can make these memberships work for you.
Like I said, there are a few other coaches I have been watching. I have grabbed a few of their courses to try them out. I am interested in trying out a few more as I grow.
