As women working in the healthcare field, there is a lot of outside stimulus in regard to our career choices. What do I mean by outside stimulus? I simply mean, opinions. You will get opinions from coworkers, opinions from random strangers, and yes, opinions from family. Having the strength to know that it’s ok to change your mind and pursue what is best for you, is incredible. I will say, I didn’t have this strength at first. When I started getting curious about leaving the healthcare field and making a career change, one of the opposing voices was the voice in my head. I know this as a subconscious belief now, but at first, I listened to this voice. If you’re a healthcare professional and you’re thinking about making a pivot into digital products and building a business. I want you to listen to this episode.
Hello again, My name is Kate Avery and if you’re new here, just a little background info for you, I have been a Nurse since 2015, I’m a mother of 3, I’m an entrepreneur coach, and so much more. Over the last few years, I started to notice how nursing was not fitting the needs of my growing family.
So I decided enough was enough and I embarked on this journey to find a better way. This has included countless self-help books, multiple courses, and a deep dive into figuring out what the heck I wanted. Now, I started this podcast to inspire and motivate you, if you also feel the burnout of nursing while supporting a growing family. Then you’re in the right place.
Let’s build our dream life together. Every week I share my adventures and I share hard lessons I have learned along the way. Make sure you follow the podcast and download the episodes every Friday, you can also follow me on Instagram at Inspirern and now on YouTube.
Don’t Get Ahead Of Yourself
Let me start by saying, you don’t have to be committed to leaving your job. I know a lot of emotions can come up when you admit to yourself that you want to leave your job. Don’t even go there yet.
You could just be getting curious about making some extra money to supplement your income so you could work part-time. Or maybe you’re brutally honest with yourself and you want a way out and a whole new career change. Either way, digital products are a great way to make a passive income.
On your journey to getting curious or maybe when you voice that you are getting curious to others, you may hear a slew of opinions. I would suggest from personal experience if you are unsure about the direction you want to take your life in, don’t share with those that you know will have something negative to say. Protect your peace and your light.
The purpose of this episode is to share some of the common opinions and yes I have heard them all and give you some reframing or tools to use to get you through the situations with your head held high.
I struggled for a long time, to find my strength when it came to my desire to change career paths, to get curious, and to level up. I’m here to support you as much as I can. I wish I could just stand next to you all day and pump you up but I haven’t figured out how to do this yet.
Work With Me
I would love to help you on your journey and I have a few ways that you can work with me. I offer two options right now. The first is the one-time 90-minute coaching and the second is the transformation program. If you want some clarity on starting your journey, you need some help focusing on the next step, or heck you need a pep talk but you’re not ready to fully jump in yet. I would suggest the 90-minute session.
If you have been curious and watching me for a while, I would suggest going all in and investing in yourself with the transformation program.
This transformation program is what I needed when I started. It’s a lot of access to me. Tons of resources, every two weeks we will tackle a new topic together and I am going to try to bring in specialists for us that you can watch on demand. There will be access to Voxer which gives you the ability to message me at any time with questions, concerns, hick-ups, or anything. So if you’re in this program and you are confronted with some opinions that are making you question your purpose, message me and I will pep talk you through the situation. Once in this program, you’ll also get to see any of my new offers or workshops that come out during your enrollment. It’s going to be “epic”. Which is my 5-year-old son’s new favorite word.
For the Transformation Program you must be on my email list to get an invite. Click here to add your name to the list.
Let’s get into some common situations that may arise so I can help you navigate them with grace.
The Guilt Trip
Have you ever heard someone guilting you or a coworker for taking a vacation because you’re short-staffed?
If doesn’t feel right. I always felt bad because you deserve to enjoy your time off and I also feel guilty when my friends are struggling at work due to staff shortages. We all have felts that pull but just because we feel guilty doesn’t mean that we’re doing anything wrong.
I had to learn the hard way that I am valuable even outside of nursing.
You will hear the same tactic used if you share your dreams and ambitions with the wrong crowd.
As nurses and healthcare professionals, when you voice that you may want to change careers or you are looking for a change you will begin to hear it all.
Examples of guilty tactics
“But you are such an amazing nurse, I don’t want the patients to lose that”
“You’re so caring as a nurse, why would you want to change?”
There are many different versions of these opinions. Basically, to sum them all up, you’re an amazing person as a healthcare professional but if you leave you’re abandoning your patients and the whole system will collapse…. Really, you and I know both know they will have you job posted quicker than you can pull out of the parking lot.
There came a time after my millionth sob story about how awesome I am and why would I do that to others, that I had to say no. I stood up on my own two feet and declared that I am worthy in every situation in my life and leaving nursing does not make me any less worthy or valuable.
I needed to form the strength and awareness to realize when I was not being true to myself.
How I Handle Opinions
When this happens now, I change the subject or stop the conversation as quickly as possible. Whether you say it out loud or to yourself (out loud makes a bigger statement). I want you to be confident and declare that you’re smart. No matter what the value that you offer this world is endless, it doesn’t stop with nursing. Know that this is true is your power.
You may not be physically saving lives with your digital products but you can change someone’s life. The struggling mother who is looking for guidance with her toddler. The stay-at-home mom who needs help organizing her life so she can stop the chaos and start being present with her kiddos. You can change a lot of people’s lives with your knowledge. Just because you’re not providing medical care doesn’t make you less valuable. I had a lot of self-worth work to do and this was hard for me to wrap my head around at first. I put a lot of time and effort into rebuilding this muscle and I must say I am proud of myself.
Worthiness
If you are noticing these comments are delaying or deterring you from starting to build that dream business. Please stop sharing your dream with those who are not supporting you and start working on your self-worth. Worthy by Jamie Kern Lima is a great book to jump-start your journey. In her own words, You’re not crazy, you’re just first.

Don’t read the comments
Have you ever seen or heard trolls commenting on Facebook or your favorite influencers’ live posts?
It’s cringe and extremely closed-minded. Yet, it happens and it happened to me for the first time last month.
I have started posting my podcasts on YouTube and converting my reels into shorts. I am working on expanding my reach right now and learning more about engagement with my audience.
So YouTube shorts have helped me reach a new audience for sure. But something very strange to me happened last month.
There was a comment war.
I have to admit I was really proud at first because my strategy was working. People were seeing my content.
The comment that was made was very unaware and if I do say so myself a little uneducated.
I pride myself on growing my growth mindset, and this comment was the opposite of that.
Basically, to sum up the comment war, one person felt that I should be ashamed of leaving healthcare and that this is why doctors and police take oaths. I don’t know, maybe they were saying that I had no honor for leaving nursing. Not totally sure but another person came to my rescue and was very open-minded, commenting on the positive change in your mental health and much more.
Autopilot
My takeaway from the story is there is a wide range of awareness out there and a large portion of our population does and probably will forever live on autopilot. This fact makes me feel sad, but just like quitting an addiction, you can’t force anyone to do something they don’t want to, no matter how bad it gets.
That is why I post this podcast. I want to inspire you to look for more. We only get one life to live and I would hate to look back on this life and wonder what might have been. If your gut is pulling you in a direction, listen and explore.
Let’s change your life
Working with me can change your life. Remember a 90-minute session, if you’re ready to get clear and dip your toe in the water, I am here. If you’re still working full-time and you want to start your journey the 90-minute session is perfect for you.
If you want to make a big change, I want you to look into enrolling in the Transformation program. The doors will open Jan 15th but you must be on the email list to get an invite.
