Is the way you think about money holding you back from achieving your financial goals? Maybe, but how in the heck do you change your money mindset? Well, I have a few suggestions that I have learned over the years that may help you start your money mindset journey. I am excited to share my experience with reframing my mindset and give you the resources I wish I had much earlier. Without further ado, let’s dive in.
Hello again, My name is Kate Avery and if you’re new here, just a little background info for you, I have been a Nurse since 2015, I’m a mother of 3, I’m an entrepreneur coach, and so much more.
Over the last few years, I started to notice how nursing was not fitting the needs of my growing family. So I decided enough was enough and I embarked on this journey to find a better way. This has included countless self-help books, multiple courses, and a deep dive into figuring out what the heck I wanted.
Now, I started this podcast to inspire and motivate you, if you also feel the burnout of nursing while supporting a growing family. Then you’re in the right place. Let’s build our dream life together.
Every week I share my adventures and I share hard lessons I have learned along the way. Make sure you follow the podcast and download the episodes every Friday, you can also follow me on Instagram at Inspirern and now on Youtube
What’s Money Mindset?
Money mindset is a hot topic right now. In the entrepreneur world, it’s just as important to focus on your mindset as it is to focus on your business strategy. I have said it before but mindset can make or break your success. That is why I spent a lot of my time on this podcast sharing tools that can help you maintain that positive mindset and also help you break out of a negative funk when it happens. Cause it’s not if, it’s a when.
So money is no different.
I had this ah-ha moment this morning and It’s so relevant to this discussion.
I have always been an employee.
It wasn’t that long ago that I attempted my first experience at having someone pay me for my value as an entrepreneur. And I must say it was very uncomfortable. Yes, the small amount felt fine, but when I was being paid 1,000s dollars for a copy job, I just felt like a fraud. I didn’t feel like I should be earning that much for doing very little.
A lot of freelance jobs, I compared to nursing, which is a terrible habit.
Where I looked at how hard I worked and how much made.
The reality is that nothing to me will be as physically or mentally hard as nursing is.
This is a mindset shift I had to make in order to be successful in my business.
As an employee, your price is typically set by the company. As long as you do your work and you don’t get fired. You get paid. Very easy to understand mentally.
Now, when you set your value as an entrepreneur, you have to battle with some learned thought processes. Some subconscious beliefs.
I never realized the depth of my subconscious beliefs until I started building this business.
My subconscious limitations
Here are a few of mine that may sound familiar
- Rich people are greedy, you can live comfortably on less
- Isn’t what you’ve been given enough for you
- Money doesn’t grow on trees
- The amount of money you make is directly related to the amount of hardwork you put into it.
- If making money is easy then you’re somehow cheating the other person.
These are all beliefs that I found to be standing in my way when it comes to understanding my values and finding success as a coach.
To grow in business and life a growth mindset is very important to adapt.
The growth mindset opens up a world of possibilities. Believing that with hardwork and determination, you can accomplish anything.
So with hard work and determination, we will shift our mindsets and find our version of success, here is what I wish I had earlier in this journey.
The Books That Shifted It All
What was the last book you read? Did it make you think in a new way, or question how you have been behaving?
I love a good self-help book and I love when they make me think and question my behavior. Becoming aware of your behaviors and how they serve you is one of the most important aspects of growth for me.
When it comes to a money mindset the resources out there can be endless. I have read my fair share of money books and I want to share a few that have changed the way I thought about making money and my limitations.
I have a reading list I made just for you. Click here and download it to get your journey off to a great start.
First up,
You Are A Badass At Making Money by Jen Sincero [links are affiliate links and provide me income if you purchase through them]. I love her. I love how honest she is and I love the way she writes. It makes you feel like she is in the room with you, giving you her life experiences. I just enjoy reading anything from her. Yet, her money book is great at highlighting why you can also make money. She talks about her journey from being a broke artist, to making money coaching fellow writers and really stepping into her power. If you are just starting I suggest you check this book out.
I also have a whole list of my favorite must-reads and I’ll share that in the show notes for you.
Second up,
The Illusion of Money by Kyle Cease. I read this one when I first started my deep dive into personal development and it was very eye-opening. He essentially is pointing out how a limited belief system can hold you back from your true potential, the one example that I remember in the book is Michael Jordyn has amnesia and is working at a grocery store making minimal wage, dreaming of being a basketball star but he doesn’t see this becoming a reality and he won’t listen to anyone. Imagine the frustration you would feel if you had to convince him that no you really are the best basketball player in the world and you need to stop wasting your time stocking shelves. This book again made me look at the way I think about making money and helped me develop a growth mindset.
Last one,
The last book is a little out there and if you know this person you will understand but Rich AF by Amanda Frances. She is a money mindset guru and she focuses a lot on faith as well, so if the concept of god and money holds you up, I would suggest checking out that.
I could go on and on about the books you should read when it comes to money mindset but I’ll save that for another episode or we’ll be here all day. But, these suggestions will get you started in reframing your mindset so that you can start taking action in a new way that will help you reach your financial goals.
Surround Yourself with Those That Inspire You.
Have you ever been hanging out with someone so negative? You start to feel that way too, You’ll maybe make a comment or just feel so low in general.
When you are working on the beginning stages of reframing your mindset. It is so vital to consume and surround yourself with the kind of people you want to be with. So think of some people who inspire you or who make you feel uplifted.
Here are a few people that I follow who inspire me to move past my fear and take action, but this choice is very personal so you may just need to pick your own.
Amanda Frances
I love listening to anything Amanda Frances, She is a very no-bull type of woman who is going to remind you how amazing you are and that you can create the life you want. She is a self-made millionaire and she is great at pep talks for sure. I’ll talk about her more in the next section so stay tuned for that.
Angie Bellemare
Angie Bellemare is another one for me. Okay yes, I love following her because she has a house in Disney, Don’t judge me. But she is also a great example of someone who creates the life she wants to live. I suggest that you follow her YouTube channel the daily grind for her know your worth series. These 30-day challenges are packed full of prompts that will keep you feeling amazing and inspired to take action toward building your dream life.
These are just two of the millions of people you can find out there that will encourage you and inspire you to reach for the stars. My suggestion is to find that person for you and consume their content regularly. This consistency is how you will change that mindset and open up your thinking.
Move Your Focus Inward.
How’s your relationship with yourself?
A lot of this work is done internally. Having a really good relationship with yourself and being able to communicate with your intuition is an important part of changing your subconscious beliefs.
Here are a few tools that I use to create that strong connection and keep my mindset moving forward.
Meditation
I use meditation on a daily basis. My favorite is found on YouTube. I search for 5-minute money meditation and listen to whatever I feel called to listen to. I also like to listen to Amanda Frances’s meditations, they can be really powerful and they help me feel like I can do anything.
Journaling
After I meditate, I journal. Sometimes I use a prompt and other times I just free-style what I am thinking about.
Here are a few prompts to get you started if you need them.
- What if XYZ happened? So for a money mindset ask what if I made 10k from that course or whatever it is that you’re feeling stuck on. Journal how you would feel or maybe how you’re feeling so that you can work through your beliefs that are making you stuck in the negative. Also, Think about what kind of energy you want to be calling in. Use this throughout the day when you feel low about money.
- Why not me? This can pertain to anything but I love this prompt. For me, this opens the floodgates and activates that “I can do anything” energy. When I journal from this energy, it brings up a lot of great steps I should take action on. It’s journaling from a place of confidence and not fear.
- This one is for you if you believe in god or a spiritual being. I ask god, what is it I should take action on today? I have been using this prompt a lot more lately. I am working on trusting the process and listening to the messages that are being sent to me. Believing in these messages and taking action on them from a place of confidence has started to change the way I approach my business. It has been very eye-opening.
Affirmations
Lastly, the use of affirmations daily has been proven to help shift your mindset. Find some affirmations that resonate with you. Make them about money. I have a whole episode on affirmations that I will link below so check that out. But you can post them on your mirror so you can see them or my favorite create alarms on your phone to go off and remind you daily.
This episode is filled with a ton of information and I have a lot of experience with shifting my mindset. I have done a lot of the work already, but by no means am I an expert. This journey to strengthen my money mindset will be continuous. I have a lot to work through and I know that I will always be working to improve my beliefs around money.
The main reason for this episode was because if you as an individual do not address your thoughts and views around money, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. Just reading a book can help you think in a new way that might unlock a new opportunity for you. I will share my beginner’s reading guide in the show notes. There are 6 books on there to get you started. Even if you just started one, You would be surprised by how your thinking could change.
So that is the challenge today, download that list and start working toward completing all 6 of them. Hey if you have been listening to me for a while you have probably already read one or two of them.
Until next week, Happy reading.
